Blair Weston has big squash shoes to fill.

Weston was elected president of the Nelson Squash Club at the group’s annual general meeting last month. He’s taking over at a time when the club is on an upswing thanks to last year’s renovations.

“I was a member from when we were a private club to when we were juggling upstairs to try to keep it alive to now when we’ve got a vibrant, active, great community asset,” said Weston.

Weston replaces Pat Hodgson, who is stepping away from the club’s board of directors.

“[Hodgson] was a guy who fought tirelessly to keep the place alive,” said Weston. “The Civic Theatre project, the project with the curling club that didn’t happen, he worked tirelessly to keep it alive and now we can move into trying to build the sport within the Kootenays in partnership with facilities in Trail and Castlegar.”

Weston said his priority will be to grow the game locally.

“What’s been great over the last year is the amount of new members we’re attracting and beginners. We want to keep providing programming so that beginners can keep playing and learn to play and move up into the more experienced playing.”

The club’s next tournament is Nov. 24-26.
