Nelson’s Matti Erickson will compete for Canada at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships.

Erickson earned a spot after winning three gold medals at the Canadian Track and Field Championships last weekend in Langley, B.C.

He took first place in the U20 800-metre race with a time of one minute 51.52 seconds, as well as gold in the U20 1,500 with a time of 3:59.81.

Erickson also won gold in the men’s 4x400 relay with Team BC, which eked out a victory ahead of an Ontario team by just 0.03 seconds.

Erickson set several provincial running records growing up in Nelson before enrolling in the University of Oregon last fall. He was named Nelson’s 2020 sports ambassador.

The World Athletics U20 Championships run Aug. 1 to 6 in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. It will be Erickson’s second trip to the event after also competing last year.
