PEE WEE REPS LOSE APPEAL
The Nelson pee wee rep squad will not be making a trip to Aldergrove for the Tier II Pee Wee Provincial Championships in late March.
The local rep team lost two straight games to Rossland/Trail earlier this month, but the series was not without controversy.
In the first game of the series Nelson fought hard, but came out on the wrong side of a 6-5 game. Needing a tie or a win to stay alive in the first-to-four-points West Kootenay series, the locals again battled hard in the second game.
Late in the third period Rossland/Trail was leading 4-3. With 1:30 left on the clock, a Nelson defenceman attempted a pass from his own zone and it missed the target and travelled down the ice. What should have been called an icing wasn’t blown down by the officials and play continued.
With play deep in the Rossland/Trail zone and the Nelson goalie pulled, Nelson scored what appeared to be the tying goal. The information was entered on the scoresheet and the score was changed to 4-4 on the Cominco Arena clock.
The officials then met and determined that icing should have been called and they disallowed the goal, breaking the hearts of the Nelson players.
Despite an appeal to West Kootenay Minor Hockey, the decision was upheld and the Nelson reps season ended in controversy.
BANTAMS RAISING CASH FOR TRIP TO THE NORTH
After disposing of Castlegar in three games to claim the West Kootenay bantam rep banner, the Nelson squad is now onto the next challenge — raising enough money for a trip to the provincials in Smithers in late March.
This Friday, parents and grandparents of the team members will be making traditional Italian pasta sauce that will be sold in one-litre containers for $10 each. Contact Len Maida at 250-354-7211 if you are interested.
The reps are also hosting a burger and beer night at Jackson’s Hole on Saturday, March 12 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Treat yourself/family to a burger/fries/beer (or for minors, a soft drink) for $10. All proceeds from these two events go directly to the team to cover expenses.
MIDGET HOUSE SEASON ENDS
After a late surge in the regular season, the Nelson midget house squad wrapped its 2010-11 campaign in Trail this past weekend.
At the West Kootenay playoffs in Trail the local midgets went 1-2 over their round robin games and missed the semi-finals.
Midget hockey players are 15 to 17 years old.
