A Nelson paddler will get a chance to compete at next year's Canada Summer Games.

Heather Potkins, of the Nelson Kayak and Canoe Club, is one of 28 athletes from eight BC clubs selected to the Games long list. Potkins' inclusion is based on results at the provincial championships last month in Kamloops.

Potkins is coming off a strong showing at the BC Summer Games last month in Abbotsford, when she won gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in canoe.

Her next step will be a fall training camp in November as she attempts to land one of 10 female spots open on Team BC.

The paddling events at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg are scheduled for July 29 to Aug. 1.
