The head of girls soccer for the Vancouver Whitecaps is impressed with what she sees in Nelson.
Emma Humphries returned to check in on local players Tuesday and Wednesday at the Kootenay Whitecaps training camp. Humphries, who played for New Zealand in the 2007 Women's World Cup, visited last year and said she was happy to return.
"I've come out to see all the good work that these guys are doing and it's good for me to see the level that all the different centres [are at] and see how these girls are progressing," said Humphries.
Girls teams have had a banner year in Nelson. The under-16 Selects won a provincial championship July 10, while the L.V. Rogers girls' squad took the BC title in June.
"They've had huge success," said Humphries. "Winning is obviously lovely for the girls but the technical ability even in a year has gone up massively. The younger group coming in is even better than the group before."
