It started 30 years ago with Balfour resident Ron Lang and his vision of 18 holes of golf for the 400-person hamlet, a huge feat. Through hard work and much community support it did happen and Balfour now boasts the world class Balfour Golf Course designed by Les Furber.

The second half of Lang’s vision was housing surrounding the course, which is perched on a hill overlooking the West Arm of Kootenay Lake and Queens Bay. That dream is also coming to fruition with Queens Bay Resort (QBR), a development joint venture with Lang’s company of shareholders, a Calgary company with ties to Bolivia and a Calgary based cottage/home building company.

This partnership has weathered the storm of the pandemic and the aftermath of supply chain issues to create affordable RV and cottage-sized lots right in the middle of the golf course. QBR has contributed to the community of Balfour by creating a new water source, now managed by the regional district, which will further improve the ability for community development.

Due to declining health, Lang has had to step back from seeing his dream come to life. He’s happy that his daughter is representing his company in the joint venture and his son is the general manager at QBR, continuing Lang’s dream for keeping Balfour a vibrant and prosperous community.
