The 11th annual SMITH Whitewater Junior Freeski Open kicks off this weekend!

Some of the best up-and-coming skiers from B.C., Alberta, and the Pacific Northwest will be converging on the slopes to compete in the event that runs Jan. 13 to 15. This IFSA-accredited competition scores competitors across five categories: line choice, control, technique, fluidity, and style and energy.

Whitewater is a hot spot for some of the world’s top freeski talent. Here are some local athletes to add to your watch list over the weekend:

Brodie Jensen is competing in the 15-18 category and is making a name for himself on the slopes of Whitewater. He continues to push the progression of the freeride team and last season represented Canada at the Freeride Junior World Championships. We’re excited to see what Brodie does on the course venue, especially with some fresh snowfall in the forecast!

Jamie Moynes is coming off a victory in 2022 to compete in the 12-14 category. With more tricks in the arsenal, it’s going to be exciting to watch as Jamie competes for back-to-back victories!

North Slater is competing in the 12-14 category and aims to make a run for the podium this year. Known for his unique style and flow, North is easy to spot from the chairlifts, especially on a powder day!

These are just a few of the local athletes competing over this weekend. Come on up to the hill to cheer on the future of the freeski community and athletes from far and wide. For more details and the complete event schedule, visit Whitewater’s events page at skiwhitewater.com.
