Nelson Figure Skating club athletes have been training hard for this coming weekend’s show.

The Nelson Figure Skating club celebrates the end of the skating season with A Century on Ice, a performance featuring music and costumes from the 20th century.

From traditional waltz to songs by the Beach Boys and Britney Spears, the show offers a tour of popular music from the early 1900s to the turn of the 21st century. Performance time is Saturday May 7 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Nelson and District Community Complex arena.

“This is the first ice show we’ve done in some time,” says club coach Rachel Stewart. “We have individual and group performances, from our youngest members to a our most seasoned skaters.”

For many younger performers the challenge of skating in sync as a group is harder than it looks.

“You’re always either trying to catch up or slow down,” comments ten-year-old Isabella Kroker Kimber.

The scope of the show is ambitious, such that coaches Yoshi Measures, Sarah Gower and program assistant Charmaine Sabo have contributed choreography and additional coaching time. Included as well is a performance by the CanSkaters, some as young five years old, and many who had never been on skates prior to the start of the season.

“It’s a question of controlled bedlam,” notes Stewart with a smile.

Group numbers will also feature the Junior and Intermediate StarSkaters with solo performances by Christina Champlin, Erica Tolles, Sophie Borhi, Sebastian Shah, Morgan Sabo, Shaen Panko-Dool and Charly DeFouw.

While the focus is showcasing what Nelson skaters have accomplished this season, the club is pleased to include solo and pairs performances by guest skaters as well. Robert Verhelst, Jacob Verhelst, Madison Favaro and Serena Deadmarsh will appear courtesy of the Beaver Valley Skating Club.

“These are more experienced skaters who will raise the performance level of the show. It’s a chance to celebrate talented skaters from around our region,” adds publicity chair Murray Kimber.

A bake sale table will be set up during the show, with refreshments for sale. Admission is by donation.
