The Nelson Star has been nominated for three provincial journalism Ma Murray awards by the BC and Yukon Community NewsMedia Association.

Reporter Bill Metcalfe’s story “Nelson’s Chinese cemetery, once an expression of discrimination, now a source of pride,” has been nominated for historical writing. The piece investigates the history of Nelson’s Chinese community through the eyes of local resident Tim Jay.

Editor-Reporter Tyler Harper meanwhile received two nominations for his work.

The story “Where do your old clothes go? Nelson thrift store struggling to keep donations out of landfill,” was nominated for the Environmental Initiative award. It examines the impact local store Positive Apparel has on textile recycling in Nelson.

Harper was also nominated for Multimedia Feature for the piece “This story about AI was written by a human: How Nelson tech experts are using new artificial intelligence tools,” which was also previously nominated for technology writing at last November’s Jack Webster Awards.

The Ma Murrays take place April 20 in North Vancouver.
