Relieved Kaslo residents can return to their homes following a mudslide scare earlier this week, but an evacuation order remains in place for six homes along Zwicky Road.

The initial evacuation occurred on Monday evening when the Regional District of Central Kootenay declared a state of emergency following a landslide at approximately 6 p.m.

Since then geotechnical engineers have investigated the site and judged it safe for most residents to return to their homes.

The engineers plan to further survey the site today and tomorrow, and displaced residents will hopefully be allowed to return within a few days. In the meantime an Emergency Services Centre has been established at the Kaslo Royal Canadian Legion Hall at 529 Arena Avenue.

Concerned parties can contact the Emergency Operations Centre reception for more information at 1-866-522-7701 or 250-352-7701.
