LETTER: Citizens' Climate Lobby responds to environment minister

Re: “From the Minister of the Environment on climate policy” (Letters, March 16)

I appreciate the minister’s quick response, through the Nelson Star, to our open letter, but am still very worried that B.C.’s carbon emissions have been rising steadily since 2012. B.C.’s greenhouse gas emissions are predicted to continue growing while other provinces succeed in addressing climate change.

The 25 megatonnes of greenhouse gas reduction your government is planning to achieve through our Climate Leadership Plan is less than half of what is needed to reach our target.

We have had extensive public consultation, a comprehensive report from government’s Climate Leadership Team, and substantial analysis from the First Ministers’ working groups.

There is now more than enough information to fill this serious emission reduction gap. B.C. voters deserve to know before election day exactly how this government plans to address the growing carbon emissions gap.

It is also very concerning that this government has set no firm target before 2050.

That is a very long ways off, especially now that we have a 2030 national target in the Pan-Canadian Plan recently signed by all the First Ministers.

Meanwhile we feel the impacts of climate change in extreme weather and forest fires. We need a better plan.
