LETTER: City should ensure winter sidewalks are cleared

We, two 80-year-old, non-handicapped residents were endangered by walking our small dog this past weekend.

The recent snowstorms have created frozen, uncleared sidewalks in our Vernon Street, Hall Street, Baker Street, Hendryx Street, around-the-block dog walks four times daily, all of which on Saturday had frozen, slippery, dangerous footing, as most did on March 3.

Why can’t Nelson City Council arrange and fund some effective sidewalk clearing in our area?

The funds involved would be saved by even one hip fracture surgery cost, let alone the pain and suffering and risk to the unfortunate victim.

I am a retired orthopedic surgeon and my wife is a retired family doctor, and I believe we speak from some knowledge here.

The footing on our block was so precarious that I kept my wife from walking our dog these last weekend days, my bone density being better than hers, thus being less vulnerable if I were to fall.

If sidewalk clearing is up to the merchants, then mandate them to do this with well-enforced bylaws.
