More than 800 athletes from across the province in 13 different sports arrived in Quesnel for the BC Winter Games, which ran Feb. 22 to 24.

On the first evening the athletes paraded proudly into the stadium for opening ceremonies. Four athletes represented Nelson Nordic Ski Club at the Games. Dawson Abraham, Gabriel Janz, and Cedric Chewter competed in cross-country skiing (2009 boys) and Dénali Davis competed in biathlon (junior girls).

Abraham earned the top podium spot, a gold medal in the five-kilometre free technique with Janz finishing sixth and Chewter in 10th. In the biathlon sprint, Davis finished ninth and earned a 12th-place finish in the biathlon individual race.

The BC Games organized a special event on the last day for the cross country and biathlon athletes with 400-metre ski sprint races through the historic town of Barkerville.

Abraham finished with the overall silver medal, followed by Janz in fourth, Chewter in seventh, and Davis sixth in their respective categories.

“It was so much fun!” said Davis.
