If the first West Kootenay Women’s Roller Derby League match of the year is anything to go by, it’s going to be a close season.

Lauren Taylor and her Portland State University teammates have positioned themselves to win a Big Sky Conference women’s championship title heading into the third round of the event in Ocotillo Golf Resort in Arizona.

She’s the grand dame of the Nelson ski scene, the doyenne of local powder hounds. Nelson’s Edna Whiteley celebrated her 90th birthday with a surprise party at Whitewater on the last day of the season.

Kim Boddy has resigned as general manager of Nelson’s Granite Point Golf Course, effective Tuesday.

Gerick Cycle’s Ross McNamara made a hole-in-one during last year’s Granite Pointe Labour Day Open, earning $15,000 for himself and $3,000 for a charity of his choice. This week McNamara (left) earmarked the latter for Nelson’s KidSport. He says he wanted the money to stay in the community and go toward youth. KidSport’s Bill McDonnell was on hand to receive the cheque.

Though the weather is hardly fitting, the L.V. Rogers boys of spring will hit the diamond this weekend for their big home tournament.
